Artist Statement for What Lies Beyond:

Through my oil on canvas paintings of planetary surfaces in our solar system, I am merging my two worlds, as space scientist and artist. I use color schemes that represent the myriad of “eyes” through which we interpret the surfaces: spacecraft cameras and filters and various instruments, computers and software, scientists stretching color to emphasize compositions, and, of course, my own artistic liberties for creating richer, brighter, and more varied hues. The layering of paint provides contemplation of the varied history that formed and altered the rocks. The intent is to create abstracted landscapes that feel almost familiar, and only upon further inspection do you realize it is not of Earth.
