Topi herd
each 10”x10” oil on canvas
$240
We passed right by large Topi herds several times while exploring the Maasai Mara in Kenya. Topi are a type of antelope, similar in size to large deer, and every single one of them could have been their own painting. For this group of small paintings, I arrange six 10”x10” canvases into a 2x3 grid, painted an abstracted floral arrangement on them, then randomly re-arranged and rotated the canvases before painting a group of Topi over the top of the colorful shapes. Using a thin layer of white to block out the negative space surrounding the animals, I used black paint to fill in the shadowy spaces on their faces and bodies, and finally I added a small amount of color to highlight each Topi. Each canvas is intended to be its own stand-alone painting, but they can be grouped together to re-create the larger herd.
