remembering to not forget
40”x30” oil on canvas

I started this painting wanting to do it almost entirely in one color, relying mostly on value and subtle shifts in hue to portray the image of this elephant in orange. Painting with a monochrome palette was definitely challenging, and even though it ended up having more of an analogous color scheme with red, orange, yellow, and green, I thoroughly enjoyed creating it and look forward to tackling this type of painting again.
The title is a reference to the impressively long memories of elephants. Every time we encountered an elephant, I wondered what they thought of the silly humans that briefly intercepted their daily journeys from the forest to the marsh and back to the forest in the Maasai Mara near where our safari camp was located. In contrast, encountering the elephants was, for us, unforgettable. I am grateful that I will get to carry the memories of these elephants with me for the rest of my life.
