I was having a hard day when I painted this in September 2021. I was missing all sorts of things that were absent or on hold because of our move in 2020, because of the pandemic, because life carries on with its ups and downs. The whole 'grass is greener' in ... (fill in the blank: what was, what could have been, what should be) rabbit hole. Not productive, but real. So on this day I didn't want to paint a happy, sunny bouquet. I felt heavy and this wilting rose, fading under my studio lights, seemed right, as if it too was missing the life that was, that could have been, should have been. Missing Life in the Sunlight, a 10"x10" oil on canvas painting framed to 12”x12”.
